Winemaker Notes

Deep purple to the edge. Gorgeous aromas of blackberries, cassis, red currant, plum, black licorice and tobacco. Integrated layers of black licorice, cherry, plum jam, toast, oak and cedar on the palate. Well balanced with supple texture and long finish.

Rosario Vera is the Gil Family’s most recent venture, taking them to the famed Rioja region. Named after the 4th generation’s mother, the winery is a testament to the role she played in the continuity of the family business. The Gil family purchased small plots of Tempranillo, aged between 15 and 60 years, in Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Alta, at altitudes between 1,300 and 2,600 feet. Each parcel is fermented and aged separately in French oak barrels.

Dry-farmed, no pesticides or herbicides, hand-harvested, Vegan

JS 91
James Suckling
Lovely violets, lavender, tea leaves and black pepper to this Rioja. A lively thread of acidity runs right through the center of the medium body, which ends grainy and tangy, though not particularly long.

Hailed as the star red variety in Spain’s most celebrated wine region, Tempranillo from Rioja, or simply labeled, “Rioja,” produces elegant wines with complex notes of red and black fruit, crushed rock, leather, toast and tobacco, whose best examples are fully capable of decades of improvement in the cellar.

Rioja wines are typically a blend of fruit from its three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental, although specific sub-region (zonas), village (municipios) and vineyard (viñedo singular) wines can now be labeled. Rioja Alta and Alavesa, at the highest elevations, are considered to be the source of the brightest, most elegant fruit, while grapes from the warmer and drier, Rioja Oriental, produce wines with deep color, great body and richness.
