Rodney Strong Sonoma Merlot 1997

The 1997 harvest was one of those years that all of the elements in winemaking were in sync and came together for our Sonoma County Merlot. A warm dry Spring encouraged a good fruit set and mostly moderate temperatures from spring to harvest caused slow and even ripening. Although some late harvest rains may have reduced the already abundant crop, the cooler temperatures provided slower and mellow ripening to produce sugars that were perfect and tannins that are soft and mature. Consequently, our 1997 Sonoma County Merlot is in beautiful balance. The aroma is ushered in with the perfume of jasmine tea and dark red fruits accented with a note of roasted almond. Opulent sweet oak interplays perfectly with flavors of blueberry, orange zest and apple pie spice. A blend of 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc help to make it full and soft in the mouth finishing with lingering flavors of red berry fruit. This wine will be a treat served with a pan roasted duck breast and dried fruit compote or just a snack of Gorgonzola cheese and crusty sourdough bread.
