Winemaker Notes

Intense black cherries, vanilla, anise and smoke in the nose with rich cherry and vanilla flavors that are full and balanced by the resolved tannins and firm acidity. Planted in 1969, this is Rochioli's oldest Pinot Noir block. This vineyard continues its reputation of greatness and the uniqueness of this wine is beyond compare.

One of the most stupendous Russian River Pinots I have ever tasted, there are just over 400 cases of this amazing wine. A ruby/purple color is accompanied by an extraordinary nose of forest floor, spring flowers, blackberries, and sweet cherries. A steely structure gives way to a wine of superb depth, richness, dimensions, length, and purity. There are 400 cases of this astounding effort, which was aged in 75% new French oak. Kudos to Tom Rochioli, one of the wine world’s great guys who, without any fanfare, continues to turn out world-class wines of extraordinary aromatic and flavor dimensions.

While the Russian River Valley is a large appellation with multiple climate zones and soil types, it is best known for cool-climate varieties, with Pinot Noir as the most celebrated. The grapes benefit from a reliable late afternoon flow of Pacific Ocean fog through the Petaluma Gap and along the Russian River Valley that ensures slow and steady ripening and the preservation of grape acidity. Today many of California’s most highly regarded Pinot Noir vineyards are in the Russian River Valley, along with its sub-appellation, Green Valley.

Historically Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs had bright red fruit and delicate earthy, mineral notes. But changes in viticultural and winemaking practices have led to stylistic changes in some of the region’s wines. Adjustments to canopy management, among other techniques, have resulted in riper fruit and bolder wines as well. These show flavors of black cherry, blackberry, cola, spice and darker, loamy earth tones, accenting traditional Pinot Noir notes of strawberry, raspberry and light cherry.
