Rivers-Marie Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2015 Front Label

Winemaker Notes

Made up of the Mount Eden, Calera, 828 and Pommard clones from the Riddle Ranch and Manzanita Vineyard, this might be Rivers-Marie's most serious edition of the straight Sonoma Coast bottling to date. There are no holes in this wine from first sniff to the last flash of finish. If this is the bottling they use to gauge the quality of the vintage, theyshould be in good shape. Dark garnet in color, the first thing that leaps out at you is a concentrated pomegranate/orange oil nose that has become our Occidental hallmark. Sassafras and black tea creep in on the palate as does some grip which helps hold and prolong the finish. The varietal trueness might be the wine’s greatest feature but there’s a lot to like here. It feels like a familiar wine, very Sonoma Coast, very Pinot and very Rivers-Marie.

The Sonoma Coast AVA is large in area but, not counting overlapping regions like Russian River Valley, only has a few thousand acres of grapevines—and it’s no wonder. Much of the region is rugged and not easily accessible. Its proximity to the Pacific Ocean’s fog and cool breezes limits the varieties that can be cultivated, but it proves to be an ideal environment for high quality Pinot Noir.

Since fog is a frequent fact of life here, as are heavy marine layers that sometimes bring rain, the best vineyards are wisely planted above the fog line, on picturesque ridges that capture enough sun to provide even ripening. That, with the overnight drop in temperature that reliably preserves acidity, results in fine expressions of Pinot Noir that often receive tremendous critic and consumer praise alike, and are often in high demand.
