    Winemaker Notes

    REGION: Veneto. The production area is located in the hills of Soave Classico at mid-altitude facing the southwest.

    GRAPE:80% Garganega - 15% Chardonnay - 5% Pinot Bianco

    METHOD: The grapes are hand picked around mid September and briefly fermented at low temperatures which allows for the wine to acquire its unique characteristics. The wine is then kept in stainless steel vats at controlled temperatures until bottling.

    CHARACTERISTICS: Light yellow with fruity character, fresh and intense bouquet, and dry flavor.

    FOOD PAIRING: Goes well with appetizers, grilled meats, soups, and fish dishes. It is also an excellent aperitif. Serve chilled.

    A large and diverse wine region in northeastern Italy, the Veneto is home to a vast array of different styles of wine. With no defining regional characteristics, it can be a bit confusing to the general consumer to parse through its many subzones, but the patient wine lover will find many treasures to be discovered here, typically at wallet-friendly prices. Red and white wines are produced here, with more emphasis on the latter, as well as the ultra-popular sparkling wine Prosecco. The region is sheltered from harsh northern European winters by the Alps, which form its northern border, but the climate is still relatively cool, making the Veneto ideal for white wine production.

    Much of Italy’s Pinot Grigio hails from the Veneto, where it can range from neutral and inoffensive to crisp and refreshing. Soave, made primarily from the Garganega grape, has a reputation for producing relatively ordinary, bulk wines, but can be very elegant when yields are carefully monitored, with aromas of lemon, almond, and white flowers. Valpolicella is the region’s best-known red wine, with juicy, tart red cherry flavors derived from the Corvina grape. Recioto and Amarone wines made from dried grapes are a regional specialty and can be very intense, heady, and cerebral.

    Flourishing in the rolling vineyards surrounding the medieval village of Soave in the Veneto region, Garganega is one of Italy’s classic white varieties. It makes up 70 to 100% of any Soave (white wine) by law, with the remainder finished off traditionally by Trebbiano di Soave for its crispness. More recently international varieties like Chardonnay are being used to create softer and fruitier Soave.

    The best Soave wines come from the Soave Classico zone, where the hills are made of decomposed granite soils and have the capacity to produce elegant and vibrant wines. The remainder of the zone tends to give rounder and fuller versions of Garganega.

    Garganega’s best white wines are steely and delicate with yellow peach, melon, almond, Herbs de Provence and lime zest flavors and aromas. Its simpler versions can offer great values and make wonderful quaffers. If you like Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Gris, try Graganega for something a little different.
