Winemaker Notes

This sparkler is produced from 100% Chardonnay grown in Regan. The wine was aged for 18 months “en tirage” on the yeast with fermentation done is the classic champenoise tradition, that is, in the bottle. This crisp clean refreshing wine is representative of the cool climate at Regan from where the grapes are grown. The dosage added included the faintest amount of brandy, as is the French tradition... the long rising bubbles in the glass add to the festive spirit of the season. The wine carries a bright yellow label reflective of the effervescent fine wine, with a detail of "Nancy’s Cuvee" shown on the front label which is a nod to the one and only Nancy Falcon, who along with winery partners have allowed for the success at Regan Vineyards Winery.

Representing the topmost expression of a Champagne house, a vintage Champagne is one made from the produce of a single, superior harvest year. Vintage Champagnes account for a mere 5% of total Champagne production and are produced about three times in a decade. Champagne is typically made as a blend of multiple years in order to preserve the house style; these will have non-vintage, or simply, NV on the label. The term, "vintage," as it applies to all wine, simply means a single harvest year.

A rugged and topographically diverse cool-climate appellation with a rich history, the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA stretches from Half Moon Bay, just south of San Francisco, to the northern border of Monterey County. Elevations range from 800 feet to upwards of 3,000 and microclimates vary substantially depending on which side of the mountains the vineyards lie; cool ocean winds and fog play an important role here. This can be a challenging region in which to grow grapes, but it is well worth the effort. Santa Cruz Mountains wines are noted for balanced acidity levels, often showing great aging potential. Wine has been made here since the 1800s, most notably from the legendary Ridge Vineyards, whose Monte Bello vineyard garners international admiration.

Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are the stars of this region, while Merlot and Zinfandel also perform quite well. Organic and sustainable vineyard practices are becoming increasingly common.
