Winemaker Notes

Structured, harmonious Blanc de Noir sparkling wine made from Pinot Noir and Meunier grapes. Cuvée Katharina is named after the younger daughter of Volker and Heide-Rose Raumland. The elegance of Pinot Noir is complemented by the power and fruit of the Meunier. Subtly smoky notes, walnut and brioche combine with fruity notes of dark berries and slightly floral hints. Dosed as Brut Nature, the cuvée is very puristic, acidic and firm and yet has a creaminess and fresh texture.

Disgorged in November 2019, the 2014 Cuvée Katharina Brut Nature is a blend of Pinot Noir and Meunier partly fermented in barriques. The 2014 opens with a clear, intense and fruity Pinot aroma intermixed with flinty notes as well as delicate vanilla and brioche aromas. Intense and full-bodied on the palate, this is an intense, rich and elegant sparkling wine with a long and complex finish. This outstanding sparkling wine can compete with any Champagne. Very expressive, seriously long and complex in its mineral nature. Tasted in March 2020.

Representing the topmost expression of a Champagne house, a vintage Champagne is one made from the produce of a single, superior harvest year. Vintage Champagnes account for a mere 5% of total Champagne production and are produced about three times in a decade. Champagne is typically made as a blend of multiple years in order to preserve the house style; these will have non-vintage, or simply, NV on the label. The term, "vintage," as it applies to all wine, simply means a single harvest year.

Extending south from the Rheingau region to become a valley of gently rolling hills, Rheinhessen is Germany’s largest wine region. The best Rieslings of Rheinhessen, often characterized by smoky, peach and citrus aromas, come from vines grown in the red soils of the Rheinterrasse.
