Pyramid Valley Kerner Vineyard Pinot Blanc 2012 Front Label
Pyramid Valley Kerner Vineyard Pinot Blanc 2012 Front Label

Winemaker Notes

Very pale straw yellow in the glass with a fresh and charming nose. Clean and pretty aromas such as orchard blossoms, alyssum, golden peach, and fresh brioche notes. Ripe, autumnal notes as well like pear and quince tart. Seems to hold all three seasons of the growing year in one bouquet. Pear and pastry again on the palate, with lovely, lingering flavors of fruit baked with spice: tarte tatin, say, made with cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, allspice. The compelling lightness of being, allied to real intensity and length

The 2012 Kerner Estate Pinot Blanc gives a gorgeous nose of ripe apples, mandarin peel, fennel and dill. Light to medium-bodied, it has very approachable acidity, a lovely creamy texture and a long herb laced finish. Rating:91+

Approachable, aromatic and pleasantly plush on the palate, Pinot Blanc is a white grape variety most associated with the Alsace region of France. Although its heritage is Burgundian, today it is rarely found there and instead thrives throughout central Europe, namely Germany and Austria, where it is known as Weissburgunder and Alto Adige where it is called Pinot Bianco. Interestingly, Pinot Blanc was born out of a mutation of the pink-skinned Pinot Gris. Somm Secret—Chardonnay fans looking to try something new would benefit from giving Pinot Blanc a try.

An icon and leading region of New Zealand's distinctive style of Sauvignon blanc, Marlborough has a unique terroir, making it ideal for high quality grape production (of many varieties). Despite some common generalizations, which could be fairly justified given that Marlborough is responsible for 90% of New Zealand's Sauvignon blanc production, the wines from this region are actually anything but homogenous. At the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island, the vineyards of Marlborough benefit from well-draining, stony soils, a dry, sunny climate and wide temperature fluctuations between day and night, a phenomenon that supports a perfect balance between berry ripeness and acidity.

The region’s king variety, Sauvignon blanc, is beloved for its pungent, aromatic character with notes of exotic tropical fruit, freshly cut grass and green bell pepper along with a refreshing streak of stony minerality. These wines are made in a wide range of styles, and winemakers take advantage of various clones, vineyard sites, fermentation styles, lees-stirring and aging regimens to differentiate their bottlings, one from one another.

Also produced successfully here are fruit-forward Pinot noirs (especially where soils are clay-rich), elegant Riesling, Pinot gris and Gewürztraminer.
