Winemaker Notes

Covering only six square miles, the Rutherford District's unique soil, sun exposure and climate make it the ideal site for great Cabernet Sauvignon. Andy Beckstoffer grows our grapes in deep alluvial fans washed down over the ages from near by Mount St. John in the Mayacamas Mountains. The vines are all 10 years old or more, grown on the historic vineyard once owned by George Yount (the first person to grow winegrapes in the valley) and later Thomas Rutherford.

The key for this vintage was a cool August, which gave the grapes a long hangtime on the vine to fully develop flavors. Packed with aromas of pencil lead, plum, toffee, clove and cinnamon (even a dash of Graham cracker crust), this 2000 Provenance Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon is a balanced wine with finesse, power and the classic "Rutherford Dust" texture of cocoa powder. This wine's intense fruit and pleasing tannin structure make charbroiled lamb, beef or even vegetables a natural choice.

Provenance Vineyards, Napa Valley, California
Image of winery
Provenance Vineyards showcases the distinctiveness of Napa Valley's best growing areas for red wines by selecting some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in the Rutherford and Oakville districts and Merlot vineyards in the Carneros district. The same uncompromising approach also characterizes Provenance winemaking, with the goal of bringing the grapes from these great vineyards to their fullest potential. Starting with its inaugural 1999 vintage, Provenance's approachable, yet cellar-worthy wines display a fine symmetry of substance and elegance.

The word provenance means "origin" or "source." In the art world, a provenance is the record of a work’s ownership, from its creation to the present day. Connoisseurs place great importance in provenance as a guarantee of authenticity. The name reflects Provenance Vineyards' goal of creating fine wines that are works of art.
