Winemaker Notes

The 2014 Coach Gun delivers scents of vanilla bean and black cherry on the nose. On the palate, there are hints of licorice, blackberry, and roasted coffee bean. The wine is rich in color and delivers velvety soft tannins on the finish.

Blend: 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, 19% Malbec, 19% Petit Verdot

Hailing from the expansive Somerston Estate, which rises to elevations of up to 2,400 feet, this blend of 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 19% Cab Franc, 19% Malbec, and 19% Petit Verdot is named for a double-barrel shotgun—and it fires off flavors and aromas with impact. Scents of black plum and roasted coffee lead to chewy tannins and mouthcoating flavors of licorice while blackberry cream and dried violets stay sensuous from start to finish. This red is bulletproof.

The 2014 Proprietary Red Coach Gun is a Bordeaux blend of 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 20% Malbec and the rest equal parts Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It is a big, whopping wine that I was shocked to see at 15.8% alcohol, as it is not the least bit hot or heavy. Loads of forest floor, dark raspberry, white chocolate and blacker fruits are soft and supple, along with silky tannin and low acidity. This is irresistible already and should continue to drink nicely for 12-15+ years.

This is a hearty Bordeaux blend with nearly equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. It’s thick and herbal with undertones of pencil, cedar and tobacco, the oak circling a rounded texture of structured richness and complexity

Priest Ranch Winery Image
Priest Ranch wines are grown and made at the Somerston Estate in the Eastern Hills of Napa Valley. The eastern part of the Somerston property was originally settled by Joshua James Priest who arrived in California in 1849. Priest gained title to 638 acres of the Catacula land grant in Soda Valley and he and his descendants managed to hold on to most of the ranch for over a century. Today, all the Priest Ranch wines are 100% Estate Grown and made from selected vineyard blocks that express integrated and intensely rich, yet approachable qualities. Priest Ranch wines represent the diversity and richness of the Somerston Estate.
