Winemaker Notes

The 2015 vintage of our L. Preston Red Rhone Blend has an incredible depth. All of the grapes were harvested and fermented separately in stainless steel tanks. The wine was then transferred to mostly neutral French and American Oak until the decision for the final blend was made. As you smell deeper into the wine you find notes of raspberry, blackberry, tobacco and a hint of vanilla. A firm tannic backbone and a supple acidity hold this blend together well, providing a sound structure for the red fruit core. As is normally the case, this wine will reward patience in the cellar and will develop well for ten years or more.

Blend: 60% Syrah, 20% Mourvedre, 10% Grenache, 5% Cinsault, 5% Carignane

With bold fruit flavors and accents of sweet spice, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre form the base of the classic Rhône Red Blend, while Carignan, Cinsault and Counoise often come in to play. Though they originated from France’s southern Rhône Valley, with some creative interpretation, Rhône blends have also become popular in other countries. Somm Secret—Putting their own local spin on the Rhône Red Blend, those from Priorat often include Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. In California, it is not uncommon to see Petite Sirah make an appearance.

A multifaceted and highly reputable sub-region of Sonoma, Dry Creek Valley is responsible for a wide range of wine styles—both red and white. One of the smallest AVAs in California, Dry Creek Valley has a winning combination of ideal geography and climate. Fertile, well-drained soils create concentrated varietal character while long, warm days, bookended by cool nights, allow grapes to reach full phenolic ripeness and balance. The warm and welcoming appellation is home to a number of family-owned vineyards and wineries that place a strong emphasis on sustainable farming practices.

Zinfandel reigns supreme here and still produces in a great number of very old vineyards—often 100 years old or older. These old vines create a powerful, voluptuous and sultry wine unlike those of any other region. Sauvignon Blanc, the valley’s signature white grape, also performs exceptionally well. Many other varieties grow comfortably here, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Syrah. Petite Sirah is often found in blends with Zinfandel.
