The Piaggia 2013 Carmignano Riserva is a delicious expression of 70% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot. The assembled wine ages in barrique for two years and some 30,000 bottles are made. I love the thick and determined way this rich red wine wraps over the palate. It shows a level of grip and tight firmness that makes it an ideal pairing partner to pork belly or foods with a succulent fatty element. It has the natural acidity and brightness to the keep the palate refreshed.

True ripe fruit in this blend of sangiovese, cabernet and merlot, with licorice and cherry. Medium to full body with a good texture and soft tannins plus a medium finish. Drink or hold.

Intense and vibrant cherry and blackcurrant nose. Very concentrated palate, this is lavish but taut, and driven by good acidity. Assertive and a touch hot in alcohol, but it’s also richly fruity and has fine length. Drinking Window 2018 - 2030
Among Italy's elite red grape varieties, Sangiovese has the perfect intersection of bright red fruit and savory earthiness and is responsible for the best red wines of Tuscany. While it is best known as the chief component of Chianti, it is also the main grape in Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and reaches the height of its power and intensity in the complex, long-lived Brunello di Montalcino. Somm Secret—Sangiovese doubles under the alias, Nielluccio, on the French island of Corsica where it produces distinctly floral and refreshing reds and rosés.
With recorded history of red wine production since the Middle Ages, Carmignano is a small, ancient, central Italian subregion ten miles northwest of Florence. Carmignano grows Sangiovese with great success in low-lying hills of 160 to 650 feet above sea level.
It is the only Tuscan DOC that required the inclusion of (up to 20%) Cabernet Sauvignon in its Sangiovese-based wines years before it became popular in the Super Tuscan blends.
