Winemaker Notes

Offering elegance, complexity and richness, the 2015 Point Rouge is an exceptional wine. The nose is filled with aromas of apricot, ripe apple, citrus oils, orange rind, Williams pear, almond and acacia honey. Seamless and rich in the mouth, notes of nougat, greengage, orange marmalade, honeysuckle, spice cake, vanilla and white truffle are framed with an oyster shell minerality. The wine offers a rare harmony, as well as extraordinary tactile persistence. While already refined, the wine will gain even more complexity in 4-5 years and should continue to age gracefully for three decades.

RP 100
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2015 Chardonnay Point Rouge is pure pedigree and class, showing all the elegance and seamlessness of a truly top-tier Chardonnay. Opening with tightly furled citrus and spiced apple notes over salty almond, cashew, allspice, anise and ginger, plus wafts of orange blossom and crushed rocks, the medium-bodied palate is wonderfully well poised, with seamless flavor layers intermingled with just enough freshness, finishing long and beautifully perfumed. Wow.
WS 93
Wine Spectator
Opens with strong smoky, toasty oak before easing into a glide, where the texture softens, revealing rich flavors of pear, fig, melon and hazelnut. The more you sip the more this grows on you. Drink now through 2024.

Peter Michael, California
Peter Michael Winery Image
In 1982 Sir Peter and Lady Margaret Michael built the Peter Michael Winery on a square mile of rocky volcanic ridges that form the western face of Mount St. Helena in Knights Valley, Sonoma County, California. The estate vineyards rest on steep hillsides ranging in elevation from 1100 to nearly 2000 feet. Of the nearly 600 estate acres, only about 20% are planted to grapes. Peter Michael Winery is best known for single-vineyard and estate grown Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and a Cabernet Sauvignon cuvee of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The Peter Michael Winery remains true to its commitment to growing classic grape varieties in small mountain vineyards in order to produce great wines using classical winemaking techniques. Given this covenant to the product, only a limited quantity will ever be available.

Home to a diverse array of smaller AVAs with varied microclimates and soil types, Sonoma County has something for every wine lover. Physically twice as large as Napa Valley, the region only produces about half the amount of wine but boasts both tremendous quality and variety. With its laid-back atmosphere and down-to-earth attitude, the wineries of Sonoma are appreciated by wine tourists for their friendliness and approachability. The entire county intends to become a 100% sustainable winegrowing region by 2019.

Sonoma County wines are produced with carefully selected grape varieties to reflect the best attributes of their sites—Dry Creek Valley’s consistent sunshine is ideal for Zinfandel, while the warm Alexander Valley is responsible for rich, voluptuous red wines like Cabernet Sauvignon. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are important throughout the county, most notably in the cooler AVAs of Russian River, Sonoma Coast and Carneros. Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Syrah have also found a firm footing here.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.
