    Winemaker Notes

Penfolds Rawson's Retreat wines present classic single varietal and varietal blends in an approachable, fresh-flavoured style. Drawing on Penfolds' extensive vineyard resource, the wines offer a first-rate quality and value guarantee, presenting the drinker with an affordable taste of everyday Australian wine at its best.

The name Rawson's Retreat is an informal reference to the stone cottage built in 1845 by Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold at the famous Magill vineyard in Adelaide, where he, with wife Mary and daughter Georgina, had settled the year before and were to establish the Penfolds winery which still operates today.

Colour: Pale straw yellow with youthful green hues.

Nose: Lovely fresh melon and citrus fruit with underlying creamy malolactic characters. A touch of spicy oak completes the wine giving it a toasted cereal lift.

Palate: First impressions are up-front melon followed by green pear and hints of clove. Toasty oak and freshly buttered popcorn meld with the fresh fruit. The finish is of zesty lemon lime leaving lingering fresh fruit characters on the palate.

    Ideally suited to Chicken, Pasta

    Penfolds Wines Winery Video

Penfolds has been producing remarkable wines since 1844 and indisputably led the development of Australian fine wine in the modern era. The introduction of Penfolds Grange in 1951 forever changed the landscape of Australian fine wine. Since then a series of stand-out wines both white and red have been released under the Penfolds masthead.

Peter Gago, Penfolds Chief Winemaker and only the 4th custodian of Grange, relishes the opportunity to bring Penfolds to the world stage and is an enthusiastic ambassador and natural educator. Penfolds came to the attention of the US market when 1990 Grange was Wine Spectator’s ‘Wine of the Year’. Since then, Penfolds Grange has become one of the most collectable wines of the world and was honored to grace the front cover, once again, of Wine Spectator, with declarations of Grange as Australia’s Icon.
