Winemaker Notes

Plum red with a nose of spice. A swirl releases an aromatic kaleidoscope of cumin, fresh clove, paprika and cardamom. Aromas of roasted spring vegetables in olive oil, with lamb and rosemary round out the offer. Classically varietal rhubarb vibrancy and flavor profile, with earthy freshly grated beetroot, cranberry sweetness and lush summer pudding. Powdery tannins combining with (oak derived) creamy cashews and walnuts give a felt-like texture/mouthfeel.

This vintage of Max’s is plush and polished, with aromas of blackberry jam, cherry cordial, pencil shavings and sweet toasted vanilla bean-and-dark-chocolate oak influence. It’s a rich but harmonious wine with balanced acidity and a thread of dusty, reticent tannins that weave it all together.

Penfolds Wines Penfolds Winery Video

Since 1844, Penfolds has been grounded in experimentation, curiosity and uncompromising quality. Their success has been driven by a lineage of visionary winemakers. It began with Dr. Christopher and Mary Penfold, the pioneers who dreamed big, inventing tonics, brandies, and fortified wines made from grapes and Australian sunshine. It continued with celebrated winemaking legends including Max Schubert, who pushed the development to extraordinary, bold new heights. It is this pioneering spirit and curiosity that still rings true after nearly two centuries, it is what has helped Penfolds become one of the most celebrated winemakers in the world today.
