Winemaker Notes

Penfolds Kalimna Bin 28 Shiraz is a deep red color. Savory notes quickly hit the radar and fruit emit quickly thereafter. Wafts of cocoa powder and a hint of vanillin entwine playfully beneath. Tanned (fresh) leather cautiously follows. A medium-bodied, balanced wine. Elegantly proportioned, yet with a firm underpinning. A familial trio of a dark-berried compote, boiled fruitcake mixture and fine chocolate powder - to the varietal tune of Shiraz. "Binding" tannins add to the length, reinforcing the extract/character/body of the wine.

Aged 13 months in old American oak hogsheads, the deep garnet-purple colored 2012 Kalimna Bin 28 Shiraz opens with a nose of baked blackberries, mulberries and crème de cassis with hints of licorice, baking spices and a touch of tar. Full-bodied with firm, rounded tannins and tons of fruit, it concludes with a very spicy, long finish. Rating: 91+

Named for the Kalimna Vineyard that originally provided the fruit for this wine, Bin 28 is now blended from sources throughout South Australia. The winemaking style parallels Grange, though Bin 28 is aged in older American oak barrels. This shows youthful energy in its black fruit flavors, the tannins firm and tensely coiled. Juicy and tight, this will age with grace.

Fresh and vibrant, with juicy blackberry and plum fruit, playing against tart balance and finishing with intensity. A pleasant mineral note adds to the aftertaste. Drink now through 2025.

Penfolds Wines Penfolds Winery Video

Since 1844, Penfolds has been grounded in experimentation, curiosity and uncompromising quality. Their success has been driven by a lineage of visionary winemakers. It began with Dr. Christopher and Mary Penfold, the pioneers who dreamed big, inventing tonics, brandies, and fortified wines made from grapes and Australian sunshine. It continued with celebrated winemaking legends including Max Schubert, who pushed the development to extraordinary, bold new heights. It is this pioneering spirit and curiosity that still rings true after nearly two centuries, it is what has helped Penfolds become one of the most celebrated winemakers in the world today.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”
