Winemaker Notes

The 2014 Maquette, a “Right-Bank” blend now with 20% Cabernet Franc, is a real beauty. With this new addition the wine hits the palate with deeper blackberry, more intense currant flavors, wrapped around layers of sweet spice, clove and mint. Beautifully structured and well balanced with an exceptional mid-palate, this wine is ready to enjoy in its youth, but will age wonderfully.

Blend: 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc

Two Bordeaux blends are produced, with the 2014 Maquette Proprietary Red an equal parts blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot aged in 70% new French oak for 20 months prior to bottling. This shows tons of chocolate, coffee bean and espresso notes with blackcurrant and mocha. The Merlot seems to be showing more character than the Cabernet at this stage of its development. It is medium to full-bodied with sweet tannin and an elegant overall personality. Drink it over the next 10-15 years.

Undoubtedly proving its merit over and over, Napa Valley is a now a leading force in the world of prestigious red wine regions. Though Cabernet Sauvignon dominates Napa Valley, other red varieties certainly thrive here. Important but often overlooked include Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties well-regarded on their own as well as for their blending capacities. Very old vine Zinfandel represents an important historical stronghold for the region and Pinot noir is produced in the cooler southern parts, close to the San Pablo Bay.

Perfectly situated running north to south, the valley acts as a corridor, pulling cool, moist air up from the San Pablo Bay in the evenings during the hot days of the growing season, which leads to even and slow grape ripening. Furthermore the valley claims over 100 soil variations including layers of volcanic, gravel, sand and silt—a combination excellent for world-class red wine production.
