Winemaker Notes

Displaying a deep crimson hue, the 2016 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir bounds from the glass with plush aromatics of Morello cherry, mulberry, baking spice, and red clay. The fine, alluring texture gives way to focused flavors of boysenberry, bergamot, and iron which continue to evolve throughout the lengthy finish.

Delightful with wild mushroom tartine, roast quail, or rosemary-rubbed leg of lamb. Serve at 50°-55° F.

Leading off the Pinot Noirs, the 2016 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley is a classic wine from this region as well as a great example of the style of this estate. Ripe black cherries, currants, flowers, and earthy notes all flow to a full-bodied, concentrated 2016 that has a beautiful sense of purity and elegance. Drink it anytime over the coming decade.

Elderberry essence, blueberry perfume, blackberry tea, some grapefruit rind and granite. Medium body, vibrant acidity, fine tannins and a fresh, citrusy finish with tons of tangy fruit.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Pinot Noir reveals pronounced black cherries, wild blueberries, baking spices and dark chocolate notes plus an alluring waft of red roses. Full-bodied, concentrated and plushly textured, it fills the palate with decadent fruit and tons of spicy accents, finishing with fantastic length.

While the Russian River Valley is a large appellation with multiple climate zones and soil types, it is best known for cool-climate varieties, with Pinot Noir as the most celebrated. The grapes benefit from a reliable late afternoon flow of Pacific Ocean fog through the Petaluma Gap and along the Russian River Valley that ensures slow and steady ripening and the preservation of grape acidity. Today many of California’s most highly regarded Pinot Noir vineyards are in the Russian River Valley, along with its sub-appellation, Green Valley.

Historically Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs had bright red fruit and delicate earthy, mineral notes. But changes in viticultural and winemaking practices have led to stylistic changes in some of the region’s wines. Adjustments to canopy management, among other techniques, have resulted in riper fruit and bolder wines as well. These show flavors of black cherry, blackberry, cola, spice and darker, loamy earth tones, accenting traditional Pinot Noir notes of strawberry, raspberry and light cherry.
