Winemaker Notes

A pale straw with lime green hue, the Oxford Landing Estates Viognier 2011 has a lifted musk and honeysuckle aroma, with a hint of poached quince and mandarin peel. The wine is richly textural on the palate with classic grainy Viognier minerality complemented perfectly with ripe flavors of late season peaches and apricots. This is great drinking now and with careful cellaring this wine will continue to exhibit these generous Viognier flavors and textures for at least two to three years.

This distinctly spicy white features exotic ginger flower and mayflower notes playing against pear and apricot flavors.

Full-figured and charmingly floral, Viognier is one of the most important white grapes of the northern Rhône where it is used both to produce single varietal wines and as an important blending grape. Look for great New World examples from California, Oregon, Washington and cooler parts of Australia. Somm Secret—Viognier plays a surprisingly important role in the red wines of Côte Rôtie in the northern Rhône. About 5% Viognier is typically co-fermented with the Syrah in order to stabilize the color, and as an added benefit, add a subtle perfume.
