Winemaker Notes

The 2008 vintage marries together the superb ripeness of the various lots of Merlot picked in the earlier phases of the harvest, with the particularly dense tannic structure of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc brought in when the weather was notably cooler. The wine shows spice and well-ripened fruit on the nose, and an intense ruby red. The body is remarkably generous and full-volume, showing profound depth, resulting from the union of Merlot's classic softness complemented by the firmness and vibrant tannins of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

Blend: 55% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2008 Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia is drop-dead gorgeous. Mocha, smoke, tar, grilled herbs and black fruit emerge from the glass, followed by a dense core of fruit, all wrapped around a firm, tannic frame. The finish is intense and very much closed in on itself at this stage. Once again, Le Serre Nuove is simply fabulous. Sometimes I think it may be too good, as the rationale for paying the premium for Ornellaia doesn’t make any sense at all when the second wine is this outstanding. The 2008 is a Serre Nuove that will need another few years in bottle for the tannins to soften, but its potential seems clear at this stage. It is every bit as impressive as it was when I tasted it for the first time last year. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.

Wine Enthusiast
This dark and concentrated blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon (with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) offers generous fullness and a full bouquet comprised of spice, mature fruit, cherry, blackberry and leather aromas. The wine is made in a friendly, approachable style and can be consumed immediately thanks to the soft plushness and richness of the tannins.

Wine Spectator
Offers so much on the nose, with cassis, currant and blueberry aromas. Full-bodied, with juicy, velvety tannins and a very long finish. A lovely combination of ripe fruit and toasty oak.

In 1981, Marchese Lodovico Antinori breathed new life into Tenuta dell' Ornellaia, an estate whose potential had been ignored for decades. With the help of Andre Tchelistcheff, the famous agronomist, Antinori planted the first French vines in Bolgheri, which lies in the heart of Tuscany's coastal region, Maremma. The estate yields some of the finest Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc in Tuscany. In 2002, Marchesi de' Frescobaldi and Robert Mondavi became owners of Tenuta dell'Ornellaia, which is now owned exclusively by Marchesi de' Frescobaldi.

Legendary in Italy for its Renaissance art and striking landscape, Tuscany is also home to many of the country’s best red wines. Sangiovese reigns supreme here, as either the single varietal, or a dominant player, in almost all of Tuscany’s best.

A remarkable Chianti, named for its region of origin, will have a bright acidity, supple tannins and plenty of cherry fruit character. From the hills and valleys surrounding the medieval village of Montalcino, come the distinguished and age-worthy wines based on Brunello (Sangiovese). Earning global acclaim since the 1970s, the Tuscan Blends are composed solely of international grape varieties or a mix of international and Sangiovese. The wine called Vine Nobile di Montepulciano, composed of Prognolo Gentile (Sangiovese) and is recognized both for finesse and power.
