Nugan Estate Third Generation Chardonnay 2015
Daren Owers is the chief winemaker at the estate. In 2004 he was awarded the Wine Society’s Young Wine Maker of the Year by its members. The wines center around the strengths of each appellation. From the cooler King Valley climate elegant Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir are produced. From the warmer climate of Riverina, rich Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet/Merlot are made to a high quality standard.
In essence a viticultural "super zone" covering Australia's best wine regions from the Pacific coast of Queensland across the states of New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and the southeastern half of South Australia. The term is used when vintners choose to source fruit from multiple regions in order to maintain a consistent finished wine from year to year.
One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.
