Winemaker Notes

Chardonnay ripens well in the warm Nelson summers as it can in many areas. However the power of very ripe Chardonnay can too often result in broad wines with no great charm or finesse. At Neudorf this rich fruit concentration is balanced by lovely retained mineral acidity resulting from a happy combination of clay gravel soil, Chardonnay clone (small berried Mendoza) and cool autumn nights. With natural attributes of such power and bright mineral focus, it is for the winemaker to use his skills and imagination to gently craft a wine of texture, balance and complexity, a wine that has a unique sense of place.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.
