Made with an oloroso sherry base, this red vermouth has a deep ruddy hue and mild dried cherry on nose and palate. Initial sweetness swiftly transforms to a lightly nutty, drying exhale. A slightly savory note teases, suggesting dried thyme and a hint of black olive. This would be especially good in a Manhattan, or other stirred-style whiskey cocktails.
Historically a dry, herb-infused, and sometimes pleasantly bitter fine wine, today vermouth is indispensable to any modern mixologist. Typically vermouths are Italian if red and sweet and French if golden and drier in character.
Known more formally as Jerez de la Frontera, Jerez is a city in Andalucía in southwest Spain and the center of the Jerez region and sherry production. Sherry is a mere English corruption of the term Jerez, while in French, Jerez is written, Xérès. Manzanilla is the freshest style of sherry, naturally derived from the seaside town of Sanlúcar de Barrameda.
