    Winemaker Notes

Each year the winemaker consistently tastes their wines from barrels, generally when barrels are topped, evaluating them for aromatics, flavors and texture. “Emily’s Cuvee” is a blend of their finest vineyards with precise percentages from each vineyard, obtained by extensive (and very enjoyable) blending trials. The goal with “Emily’s Cuvée” is to produce a wine that is very generous in fruity aromatics, rich in flavors yet with a gentle softness and fullness on the palate that makes the wine so immensely and immediately enjoyable.

Bob and Lori Mueller founded Mueller Winery in 1991, in the small town of Healdsburg in Northern California. Bob's involvement is in every aspect of the "grapes to glass" process, from pruning and crop control in the vineyard, to berry sorting and punch-downs in the cellar. In 2001, the Mueller Family decided to build a smaller facility on a large piece of land in the outskirts of Windsor, in the Russian River appellation. The rural landscape is the perfect place for Lori and Bob to raise their daughter, Emily, while continuing to make small lots of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel.

While the Russian River Valley is a large appellation with multiple climate zones and soil types, it is best known for cool-climate varieties, with Pinot Noir as the most celebrated. The grapes benefit from a reliable late afternoon flow of Pacific Ocean fog through the Petaluma Gap and along the Russian River Valley that ensures slow and steady ripening and the preservation of grape acidity. Today many of California’s most highly regarded Pinot Noir vineyards are in the Russian River Valley, along with its sub-appellation, Green Valley.

Historically Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs had bright red fruit and delicate earthy, mineral notes. But changes in viticultural and winemaking practices have led to stylistic changes in some of the region’s wines. Adjustments to canopy management, among other techniques, have resulted in riper fruit and bolder wines as well. These show flavors of black cherry, blackberry, cola, spice and darker, loamy earth tones, accenting traditional Pinot Noir notes of strawberry, raspberry and light cherry.
