Winemaker Notes

The wine has a medium straw color, with some green tints and its condition is bright. On the nose, it is ethereal, with lifted perfumes of lemon sherbet, green apples, honeysuckle, and figs. Underneath there are just some early suggestions of the variety’s complex features like lanolin and mushroom. Always expect our Semillon to be relatively firm as a youngster and this wine certainly has good acidity and tannin. However, the fruit flavors of limes, figs, and lychees are rich, generous and mouth-filling, so the wine displays softness and drinkability only seen in the great years.

A bright and fresh yet complex young semillon. It has lemons and white nectarines gently dressed in some biscuity and nutty aromas. The palate has bright acid spark and a fleshy smooth build into the finish. Drink now or hold. Screw cap.

COMMENTARY: The 2017 Moss Wood Wilyabrup Semillon is an excellent wine. TASTING NOTES: This wine is zesty and bright. Enjoy its distinctive aromas and flavors of zesty citrus and savory spices with longneck clam sashimi with thinly-sliced scallions and light soy. (Tasted: February 5, 2019, San Francisco, CA)

Sémillon has the power to create wines with considerable structure, depth and length that will improve for several decades. It is the perfect partner to the vivdly aromatic Sauvignon Blanc. Sémillon especially shines in the Bordeaux region of Sauternes, which produces some of the world’s greatest sweet wines. Somm Secret—Sémillon was so common in South Africa in the 1820s, covering 93% of the country’s vineyard area, it was simply referred to as Wyndruif, or “wine grape.”

Home to some of Australia’s most elegant and long-lived red and white wines, Margaret River is situated in the farthest reaches of Western Australia. Relatively warm and dry, the region is cooled by breezes from the Indian Ocean. Margaret River takes some inspiration from Bordeaux, producing top-quality Cabernet Sauvignons and Bordeaux Blends with firm structure, mouthwatering acidity, balanced alcohol and notes of herbs and spice. For white wines, refreshing blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon as well as complex, age-worthy Chardonnays are regional specialties.
