Winemaker Notes

Bearing an extraordinary combination of fruit from a trifecta of Napa Valley's most celebrated vineyard blocks, the 2012 Cor Leonis Cabernet is the epitome of Moone-Tsai's winemaking philosophy. Announcing itself with ripe black fruit on the nose, the wine bears all the hallmarks of a classic storied cabernet. Lush in the mouth, the wine teases with cocoa powder, hints of sweet vanilla, and wet stone. Twenty four months of framing in 90% new French oak provides elegant framing for this wine's concentration and boldness. With its seamless integration of both sweet and finely grained tannins, the wine is opulent on the palate, and delivers a silky finish of length and elegance.

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Cor Leonis (which was scheduled to be bottled after I tasted it) spent 26 months in 90% new French oak. It offers up notes of vanillin, graphite, blackberries, cassis and spring flowers. This full-bodied, opulent, rich, concentrated 2012 reveals no hard edges, well-concealed tannins and structural components. It should be accessible upon release and drink well for 15-20 years. Range: 92-94

A rich and layered red with soft and silky tannins plus focused, intense blueberry and chocolate character. Full body. Very fruity finish. Drink or hold.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
