Winemaker Notes

Vines for the flagship Montevertine Rosso come from a variety of parcels: primarily from the Montevertine plot itself (2.5 hectares with south-southeast exposition planted mainly in 1982) just below the house itself, but also from nearby Villanova and Il Pesa, along with choicer parcels from the Selvole and Il Casino vineyards mentioned above. Just as with Pian del Ciampolo, fermentation takes place naturally in enormous cement vats, and the wine is aged two full years in a variety of large old Slavonian oak casks before bottling without fining or filtering. Beginning with the 2021 vintage, this bottling includes a younger planting in Docciole, which contributes a certain juicy exuberance—a welcome bit of lift in today’s “new normal” of relatively hot and lavish growing seasons. 2022 presented Martino and his team with a now-customary intensely warm growing season, so much so that maturation was arrested temporarily, and harvest began on the late date of October 5th. Despite these fits and starts, however, the end result is a wine of terrific balance—one which, despite its slightly blacker fruit and denser tannic structure, is recognizably Montevertine in its robust acidity, its gently savory earth elements, and its overall magisterial poise.

The 2022 Montevertine is a total stunner. Readers will find a wine of uncommon depth and resonance, all in the classic Montevertine style with the purity of fruit of today's wines. Dark red cherry, red plum, blood orange, pomegranate, spice, menthol and rose petal stain the palate. All the elements are so well balanced. Silky tannins are completely incorporated in the wine's fabric. This is super-impressive. Montevertine is increasingly the wine for the shrewd consumer to buy here.

Occupying the second ring in a tight portfolio of three wines is the 2022 Montevertine. This is 90% Sangiovese with smaller parts Canaiolo and Colorino that starts off in cement and matures in botte grande. Winemaking is straightforward, traditional and hands-off. However, the intensity is taken up quite a notch compared to the Pian del Ciampolo. This wine shows extra ripeness and more of those Tuscan, sunshine-driven flavors of dark fruit and plum. It also has more volume and layering that is typical of this succulent vintage. It's really lovely. Montevertine reveals complexity and great freshness too, which keeps it in check.

A classy wine with bright, polished aromas of red cherries, bergamot, licorice and a touch of leather. The palate is elegant, with medium-bodied, relaxing, velvety tannins that are firm and integrated, crisp acidity and a long, warming, savory finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.

Legendary in Italy for its Renaissance art and striking landscape, Tuscany is also home to many of the country’s best red wines. Sangiovese reigns supreme here, as either the single varietal, or a dominant player, in almost all of Tuscany’s best.

A remarkable Chianti, named for its region of origin, will have a bright acidity, supple tannins and plenty of cherry fruit character. From the hills and valleys surrounding the medieval village of Montalcino, come the distinguished and age-worthy wines based on Brunello (Sangiovese). Earning global acclaim since the 1970s, the Tuscan Blends are composed solely of international grape varieties or a mix of international and Sangiovese. The wine called Vine Nobile di Montepulciano, composed of Prognolo Gentile (Sangiovese) and is recognized both for finesse and power.
