Winemaker Notes

This wine has generous bright ruby red color. The aroma suggests blackberries, dry fig, light reminiscences of cinnamon and elegant spiciness given by the ligh toast of the French oak barrels. it has a well balanced freshness with an adequate level of acidity that makes the wine linger in elegance.

50% Carignan, 30% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre

Critical Acclaim

RP 91
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2010 Outer Limits CGM is a blend of 50% Carignan, 30% Grenache and 20% Mourvedre and sees some ageing in lightly toasted French oak. It has an elegant bouquet with fresh strawberry and blueberry aromas intermixed with a hint of licorice. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, and good fruit intensity with blackberry, raspberry coulis and orange peel. The acidity is racy, lending this powerful wine tautness and focus. Excellent. Drink 2013-2020.

Montes, Colchagua Valley, Rapel Valley, Chile
Image of winery
With the release of the first Montes Alpha wine back in 1988, Montes became one of the first premium wineries of Chile. Their premise, a clear belief that Chile had an untapped potential as a producer of quality wines, made them a benchmark for other wineries to follow. Its original four partners' total involvement and the continuous help of the angels that decorate their labels was key to their success. Two decades later, Montes is the fifth most important winery of Chile where Aurelio Montes continues leading the winemaking area with the same passion as the first day. Hard work and total focus on quality has led Montes to be one of the most successful and respected quality-driven wineries in Chile as they continue pioneering and breaking new grounds in wine.

Colchagua Valley

View all wine

Well-regarded for great values in bold red wines, the Colchagua Valley is situated in the southern part of Chile’s Rapel Valley, with many of the best vineyards lying in the foothills of the Coastal Range. Here, hundred-year-old vines are juxtaposed with cutting-edge technology in both the vineyard and the winery, and French investment has been a boon to the local viticultural industry. The textbook Mediterranean climate makes winegrowing almost effortless.

The warm, dry growing season in the Colchagua Valley favors robust reds made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Malbec, and Syrah. A small amount of white wine is produced from Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Other Red Blends

With hundreds of red grape varieties to choose from, winemakers have the freedom to create a virtually endless assortment of blended wines. In many European regions, strict laws are in place determining the set of varieties that may be used, but in the New World experimentation is permitted and encouraged. Blending can be utilized to create complex wines with many different layers of flavors and aromas, or to create more balanced wines. For example, a variety that is soft and full-bodied may be combined with one that is lighter with naturally high acidity. Sometimes small amounts of a particular variety are added to boost color or aromatics. Blending can take place before or after fermentation, with the latter, more popular option giving more control to the winemaker over the final qualities of the wine.
