Aromas of rose petals, crushed stones, strawberries and cherries. It’s medium-bodied with a solid core of fruit, fine tannins and a long, consistent finish. Extremely well done. A blend of 85% sangiovese and 15% cabernet sauvignon. So drinkable now. Why wait?

The 2023 Nardo has really come together since I last tasted it just prior to bottling. Crushed flowers, ripe red berry fruit, mint and caressing spice notes build effortlessly. From tank, the 2023 was rather brooding. Today it is so expressive, but then again, Sangiovese can be quite moody in its youth. This may be the most refined wine I have ever tasted at Montepeloso.

In the bottle with the white label, the Montepeloso 2023 Nardo is a blend of 85% Sangiovese and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented in stainless steel and matured in oak with 40% new wood. The vineyards are planted on schistic galestro soils, lending extra structure and mineral definition to this limited release of 2,000 bottles. While coastal Sangiovese in Tuscany can often feel heavier and more one-dimensional than versions grown further inland, this wine still delivers good intensity, framed by firm structure and savory depth.

Legendary in Italy for its Renaissance art and striking landscape, Tuscany is also home to many of the country’s best red wines. Sangiovese reigns supreme here, as either the single varietal, or a dominant player, in almost all of Tuscany’s best.

A remarkable Chianti, named for its region of origin, will have a bright acidity, supple tannins and plenty of cherry fruit character. From the hills and valleys surrounding the medieval village of Montalcino, come the distinguished and age-worthy wines based on Brunello (Sangiovese). Earning global acclaim since the 1970s, the Tuscan Blends are composed solely of international grape varieties or a mix of international and Sangiovese. The wine called Vine Nobile di Montepulciano, composed of Prognolo Gentile (Sangiovese) and is recognized both for finesse and power.
