Winemaker Notes

This vineyard belongs to Burt Williams of Williams & Selyem fame. After Burt and Ed Selyem sold their winery in 1997, Burt decided to buy a hillside parcel and planted it in 1998. After 3 years of trying we finally convinced him to sell us about 2 acres worth of grapes in 2006. The wine here is the most Burgundy-like of all the Pinots made in California, as it is the coolest grape growing region in the state. Lighter, more fragrant and perfumed, with bright red fruit on the palate.

COMMENTARY: When a wine has two very dynamic folks behind it—Emmanuel Kemiji, M.S., owner of Miura Vineyards and Burt Williams, winegrower—one has to pay attention to what is produced. The 2012 Miura Vineyards Williams Ranch Pinot Noir is a standout! TASTING NOTES: This wine shows excellent intensity and superior balanced. Its aromas and flavors of ripe boysenberries and floral accents should pair it divinely with light grilled Loch Duart Salmon. (Tasted: November 7, 2018, San Francisco, CA)

Anderson Valley, located in Mendocino County just above Sonoma County, is one of California’s coolest AVAs, allowing it a long growing season. Only 15 miles long, the region makes a slice eastward through the mountains, from the frigid Pacific Ocean. Dramatic diurnal temperature variations here preserve grape acidity and thus freshness in the finished wines. These are prime conditions for growing Pinot Noir, and the valley produces many fine versions. Characteristics of Anderson Valley Pinot Noir typically include crisp acidity, cranberry and strawberry notes as well as earthy notes of forest floor and mushroom.

Still Pinot Noir, however, is only part of the story. Pinot Noir, along with Chardonnay, are also grown for Anderson Valley’s exceptional sparkling wines. Produced via the traditional method, these offer a classic toasty note from lees aging, bright, complex fruit notes and a clean, refreshing character.
