Winemaker Notes

The color of a scarlet-red rose, this Pinot shows immediate appeal as its mouth-watering aroma literally pours from the glass. Masses of cherries – Queen Anne, Black, Bing and even scents of homemade cherry pie – fill the glass. The focused fruit character is complemented by a dash of white pepper, molasses, caramel and red licorice. Silky and elegant, the palate is rich with supple tannins, while a hint of rose petals dusts the velvet finish. Its old vine heritage gives this wine an understated power and sure potential for long term aging.

Wine Enthusiast
There’s tons of cherry, cola and licorice flavor in this vigorous young Pinot. It also shows an earthy streak of herbs and mushrooms, suggesting a sautéed Portobello splashed with balsamic. The result is complex and fascinating, yet vigorous tannins and keen acidity warrant time in the cellar.

Merry Edwards, California
Merry Edwards Winery Image
In 1997, Merry Edwards established her eponymous brand with a focus on producing Pinot Noir from the finest vineyards in Sonoma County's Russian River Valley. in 2008, she and her husband, Ken Coopersmith, completed their new winery on the site of the Coopersmith Vineyard. In addition to this property, their estate vineyards now include Cresta d'Oro, Flax, Georganne, Meredith Estate and Sanchietti. They continue to partner with several dedicated local growers to supplement this estate production. Along with the two regional blends, six vineyard-designated Pinot Noirs are bottled. In 2001, a barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc was added to the portfolio.

A standout region for its decidedly Californian take on Burgundian varieties, the Russian River Valley is named for the eponymous river that flows through it. While there are warm pockets of the AVA, it is mostly a cool-climate growing region thanks to breezes and fog from the nearby Pacific Ocean.

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir reign supreme in Russian River, with the best examples demonstrating a unique combination of richness and restraint. The cool weather makes Russian River an ideal AVA for sparkling wine production, utilizing the aforementioned varieties. Zinfandel also performs exceptionally well here. Within the Russian River Valley lie the smaller appellations of Chalk Hill and Green Valley. The former, farther from the ocean, is relatively warm, with a focus on red and white Bordeaux varieties. The latter is the coolest, foggiest parcel of the Russian River Valley and is responsible for outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
