Winemaker Notes

The aromatic experience begins as lovely scents of roses and wildflowers seem to drift into mind, gently caressing the senses. Deeply layered, a rich perfume of sassafras, cinnamon and candy-ripe blackberry fruit effuses from the glass. Sweet and rich on entry, the fine palate wraps you in a mother's full embrace and doesn't let go. Please raise a glass of Angel Wing with me and celebrate the lives of those we love.

This is a very powerful, young Pinot Noir, in the way it hits the palate and commandeers it with fruit and tannins. Offers vast waves of cherries, raspberries, red currants, cola, spices and oak, in a dry, silky package. Clearly too young, it needs to be cellared until mellow.

This is the first vintage of Angel Wing, made from a field blend of clones harvested at Merry Edwards's Meredith Estate Vineyard on the cool southern edge of the Russian River Valley. This lot came into the winery on the morning that her young son, Warren Miller, passed away; as it developed in the winery, Edwards decided to keep it separate and bottle it as a tribute to her son. The wine's complexity centers on bosky cherry and floral spice. It has the round and luscious texture that Edwards achieves in her best pinots, this one balancing the warmth of alcohol with a structure that will benefit from years of development in the bottle.

Connoisseurs' Guide
Just as with this producer's other 2006 Pinots, this limited commemorative bottling is a wine meant for age. It is deep in dense, cherry-like fruit and hints at layering to come with elements of sweet spice, dried flowers and trim oak just beginning to show. Its sophistication is clear even if it is still a bit tight and framed by fairly firm finishing acids, but it has all the right pieces in place to grow into beauty if allowed to sit quietly for four or five years.

In 1997, Merry Edwards established her eponymous brand with a focus on producing Pinot Noir from the finest vineyards in Sonoma County's Russian River Valley. in 2008, she and her husband, Ken Coopersmith, completed their new winery on the site of the Coopersmith Vineyard. In addition to this property, their estate vineyards now include Cresta d'Oro, Flax, Georganne, Meredith Estate and Sanchietti. They continue to partner with several dedicated local growers to supplement this estate production. Along with the two regional blends, six vineyard-designated Pinot Noirs are bottled. In 2001, a barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc was added to the portfolio.

A standout region for its decidedly Californian take on Burgundian varieties, the Russian River Valley is named for the eponymous river that flows through it. While there are warm pockets of the AVA, it is mostly a cool-climate growing region thanks to breezes and fog from the nearby Pacific Ocean.

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir reign supreme in Russian River, with the best examples demonstrating a unique combination of richness and restraint. The cool weather makes Russian River an ideal AVA for sparkling wine production, utilizing the aforementioned varieties. Zinfandel also performs exceptionally well here. Within the Russian River Valley lie the smaller appellations of Chalk Hill and Green Valley. The former, farther from the ocean, is relatively warm, with a focus on red and white Bordeaux varieties. The latter is the coolest, foggiest parcel of the Russian River Valley and is responsible for outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
