Medlock Ames Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 Front Label

Winemaker Notes

This wine opens up with beautiful and powerful aromatics. The first sip follows through on the bold promises made by the aroma, by offering a lush mouthfeel and mouthwatering acidity. Filled with red fruits, this Cabernet Sauvignon offers ripe cherry, strawberry, and a touch of cranberry flavors. A tiny percentage of Malbec and Petit Verdot provide the accent notes to the solid Cabernet core, while the Merlot lends additional structure. There is a sweetness, like that from a black plum confit, that combines with toasty caramel and cedar box from barrel aging. The subtle oak component reflects the wine's balance and bold structure with nicely managed tannins. The long finish has no harsh edges and reminds us why we love our Alexander Valley mountain-grown fruit.

While Sonoma County is acclaimed—and rightfully so—for its Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and Zinfandels, it also produces exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Of the region’s 18 American Viticultural Areas, only a handful produce top-notch Cabernet Sauvignon. These appellations include Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Sonoma Valley and Dry Creek Valley. Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignons made in these appellations can offer a complex array of aromas and flavors. Fruit notes such as blackberry, blackcurrant, cassis, black cherry and raspberry often are accompanied by hints of graphite, dusty earth, cigar box, toast and vanilla. The varietal has a rich history in Sonoma, and some of these Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet-based blends rival the best from Napa Valley.
