Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Planted at nearly 950 ft in elevation, the Jack’s Cabin Vineyard is relatively hidden from Rockpile's strong coastal breezes, which makes it the least stressed of all the blocks. Aromas of high-toned black cherry are overlaid with cocoa powder and sweet baking spices. The rich entry explodes with dried red fruit followed by hints of espresso grounds and graham cracker. Plush tannins overlay the incredible ripe and rich fruit that the Jack’s Cabin Zinfandel offers.

Professional Ratings

Intense and densely structured, this wine is built for the cellar, offering raspberry, loamy mineral and briary cracked pepper flavors that finish with ripe, burly tannins. Best from 2020 through 2025.

Since 1868, six generations of the Mauritson family have grown grapes in the Dry Creek Valley. These 140 years of farming have crafted their winemaking philosophy; Great wine is made in the vineyard. Each harvest they reserve the best fruit from their 280 acres throughout the Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley and Rockpile appellations. This allows them to showcase the individuality of their incredible vineyard holdings by creating single-vineyard wines as well as wines distinctive of the appellations themselves.

Unapologetically bold, spice-driven and jammy, Zinfandel has secured its title as the darling of California vintners by adapting well to the state's diverse microclimates and landscapes. Born in Croatia, it later made its way to southern Italy where it was named Primitivo. Fortunately, the imperial nursery of Vienna catalogued specimens of the vine, and it later made its way to New England in 1829. Parading the true American spirit, Zinfandel found a new home in California during the Gold Rush of 1849. Somm Secret—California's ancient vines of Zinfandel are those that survived the neglect of Prohibition; today these vines produce the most concentrated, ethereal and complex examples.

High elevation vineyards—800 to 2,100 feet—on well-drained soils of red and brown clay loam, gravel and large rock outcroppings produce low yields of intense, high-quality fruit. Surrounded by Northern Sonoma County and overlapping Dry Creek Valley in its northwest corner, the Rockpile AVA produces some of California most powerful Zinfandel, Petit Sirah, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon based wines.
