Mauritson Rockpile Cemetery Vineyard Zinfandel 2012 Front Label

Winemaker Notes

Characteristic of the incredible 2012 vintage, this is one of the finest Zinfandels we have ever made from the Cemetery vineyard. The nose is a combination of dark fruit, minerals, hints of toasted brioche and subtle oak. On the entry, the wine is both lush and powerful. The brooding nature of the fruit is apparent as are the complex layers that this wine has to reveal. The 2012 vintage is one of the most balanced of the past decade. Ripe fruit and rich notes of roasted coffee are complemented by earthen minerals. The tannins are both firm and velvety, and the acid gives the wine freshness. Enjoy the 2012 Cemetery Vineyard Zinfandel over the next 7-10 years.

The family's Rockpile Ridge Vineyards are located at nearly 1,200 ft elevation in the Rockpile appellation. The Cemetery block gets its name from the unusual outcropping of rock at the bottom of the vineyard that resembles giant headstones. This area of the ranch has been called the Cemetery for over 140 years. The Cemetery Vineyard straddles the Rodgers Creek Fault, one of the more active earthquake faults in Northern California, giving it amazing diversity or soil composition.

Unapologetically bold, spice-driven and jammy, Zinfandel has secured its title as the darling of California vintners by adapting well to the state's diverse microclimates and landscapes. Born in Croatia, it later made its way to southern Italy where it was named Primitivo. Fortunately, the imperial nursery of Vienna catalogued specimens of the vine, and it later made its way to New England in 1829. Parading the true American spirit, Zinfandel found a new home in California during the Gold Rush of 1849. Somm Secret—California's ancient vines of Zinfandel are those that survived the neglect of Prohibition; today these vines produce the most concentrated, ethereal and complex examples.

High elevation vineyards—800 to 2,100 feet—on well-drained soils of red and brown clay loam, gravel and large rock outcroppings produce low yields of intense, high-quality fruit. Surrounded by Northern Sonoma County and overlapping Dry Creek Valley in its northwest corner, the Rockpile AVA produces some of California most powerful Zinfandel, Petit Sirah, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon based wines.
