    Winemaker Notes

    The Mastroberardino family has rescued and relaunched the ancient Greco di Tufo vine, which was near extinction. Novaserra, made from rigorously selected grapes, has great organoleptic complexity. The label features details from a painting by De Rosa, which can be found on the ceiling of the winery’s cellar.

    Deep straw yellow color. Prominent hints of apricot, pear, apple, peach, citrus, green almond, with hints of sage and mineral notes. Good acidity on the palate, mineral, flavors of ripe fruits. Great structure and a distinctive sapidity.

    A good pairing with vegetable soups, white meats, shellfish and elaborated seafood.

    Mastroberardino is Campania's most renowned winery, established in the 1750s by winemaker Pietro di Mastro Berardino. Pietro was awarded the professional title of 'Mastro' as testament to his skills in quality winemaking, a tradition that has continued uninterrupted for ten generations and one that still continues today. Located in the town of Altripalda, in the ancient region of Irpinia, this family-based firm has long championed the indigenous varieties of this region: Aglianico, Falanghina, Fiano, Piedirosso, Greco and Coda di Volpe. Today, Mastroberardino is universally acknowledged to have been the most important guardian of the ancient winemaking heritage of Campania.

    Named “Oenotria” by the ancient Greeks for its abundance of grapevines, Italy has always had a culture that is virtually inextricable from wine. Wine grapes are grown just about everywhere throughout the country—a long and narrow boot-shaped peninsula extending into the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. The defining geographical feature of the country is the Apennine Mountain range, extending from Liguria in the north to Calabria in the south. The island of Sicily nearly grazes the toe of Italy’s boot, while Sardinia lies to the country’s west. Climate varies significantly throughout the country, with temperature being somewhat more dependent on elevation than latitude, though it is safe to generalize that the south is warmer. Much of the highest quality viticulture takes place on gently rolling, picturesque hillsides.

    Italy boasts more indigenous varieties than any other country—between 500 and 800, depending on whom you ask—and most wine production relies upon these native grapes. In some regions, international varieties have worked their way in, but their use is declining in popularity, especially as younger growers begun to take interest in rediscovering forgotten local specialties. Sangiovese is the most widely planted variety in the country, reaching its greatest potential in parts of Tuscany. Nebbiolo is the prized grape of Piedmont in the northwest, producing singular, complex and age-worthy wines. Other important varieties include Montepulciano, Trebbiano, Barbera, Nero d’Avola and of course, Pinot Grigio.

    This late-ripening variety from Campania flaunts an invigorating mineral character—more so than its other regional white grape compatriots, Fiano and Falanghina. Bursting with fresh citrus, stone fruit, herb and spice, Greco di Tufo wines are dark lemon or gold in color but as that might suggest, aren’t particularly heavy on the palate. The wines are medium- to full-bodied and have a relatively high acidity. The name Tufo comes from the soft, volcanic rock found all over in the subsoil of the region where Greco thrives.
