Winemaker Notes

The appellation takes its name from the river Sesia which courses its way past Lessona carrying the cooling waters of the mountains and great lakes to the north. Here, the Nebbiolo, known by its local name "Spanna," finds its home on the hillsides in the poor soils of this region where it benefits from a long growing season that permits the grape to achieve maximum maturity while retaining its formidable acidity. The grapes for this cuvée (100% Nebbiolo) come primarily from the "Vigneto del Putin" vineyard site from vines planted in 1984. The wine is aged in barrel for at least one year before bottling.

Attracting the most glory, prestige and fame to the Piedmont region, Nebbiolo in all of its expressions—Barolo, Barbaresco, Roero, Ghemme and Gattinara—creates a complex wine, truly unique for its delicate qualities combined with strength and a great potential to improve over time.

But Nebbiolo isn’t all there is to red wine from Piedmont! Barbera is the most planted variety and historically most popular as a dependable, food-friendly, everyday wine.

Beyond these two, a surprising number of red varieties call Piedmont their home. Worth a try include Dolcetto for its bold concentration and aromas of spice cake. Other grapes to investigate include Freisa, Croatina, Brachetto, Grignolino and Pelaverga.
