This was tasted as a barrel sample. A blend of Bordeaux varieties, the 2017 M by Marciano has a deep garnet-purple color and comes strutting out of the glass with the most gorgeous perfume of lilacs, red roses and baking spices, over a core of warm cassis, blackberry pie and preserved blueberries with wafts of pencil shavings and black loam. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is elegantly crafted with a quiet intensity and compelling tension, textured with beautifully fine-grained tannins, finishing long and fragrant.

More red plums, chocolate, Asian spices, and graphite notes emerge from the 2017 M Proprietary Red Wine, and it shows the more streamlined, elegant, focused style of the vintage. While 2017 was a challenging vintage, don't think for a second brilliant wines weren't made. This one is medium to full-bodied, has a fresh, elegant mouthfeel, and one great finish. Drink bottles over the coming 15-20 years. Best After 2021
Undoubtedly proving its merit over and over, Napa Valley is a now a leading force in the world of prestigious red wine regions. Though Cabernet Sauvignon dominates Napa Valley, other red varieties certainly thrive here. Important but often overlooked include Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties well-regarded on their own as well as for their blending capacities. Very old vine Zinfandel represents an important historical stronghold for the region and Pinot noir is produced in the cooler southern parts, close to the San Pablo Bay.
Perfectly situated running north to south, the valley acts as a corridor, pulling cool, moist air up from the San Pablo Bay in the evenings during the hot days of the growing season, which leads to even and slow grape ripening. Furthermore the valley claims over 100 soil variations including layers of volcanic, gravel, sand and silt—a combination excellent for world-class red wine production.
