Marchesi Antinori Tignanello 2006 Front Label
Marchesi Antinori Tignanello 2006 Front Label

Winemaker Notes

A blend of 85% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc.

Very intense ruby red color. Nicely expressed varietal aromas with hints of ripe red fruit and spice. The palate is weighty, dense and elegant with complex structure thanks to the acidity. Long and lingering with hints of chocolate, coffee and marmalade on the finish. The beautifully handled tannins from the wine and wood aging makes Tignanello a very complex, stylish and sophisticated wine.

Pioneered by Giacomo Tachis in the late 1970s, this wine burst onto the international fine wine scene with dazzling effect. A single-vineyard wine from the Chianti Classico zone, it was among the first to include Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in the blend, and barriques for ageing. As a consequence, it had to be labelled as Vino da Tavola It isn’t made in every vintage, so when it’s good, it’s very good. This 2006, from Spurrier's own cellar, is just such a wine, with unyielding color right to the rim. The sweet nose has a singed tobacco note. On the palate it's full of sweet, juicy cassis and plum with a layer of cedar and earthy sous-bois. Dry, rich and elegantly full, the 2006 has grip, texture and volume in spades, followed by a gorgeously long finish.

Thanks to its excellent quality and universal appeal, you can count on Tignanello to make an excellent impression with any elegant meal…The wine delivers an interesting power play that pits cherry fruit against vibrant spice. It is tight and firm in the mouth with a slightly sweet or soft note on the close.

Intense aromas of ripe blackberry and flowers, with rosemary and coffee hints. Full-bodied, with chewy, polished tannins. Excellent fruit concentration and a flavorful aftertaste. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best after 2012. 29,165 cases made.

The 2006 Tignanello is especially opulent in this vintage. Masses of dark red fruit, scorched earth and sweet oak emerge as this richly-textured Tignanello flows from the glass. The wine possesses superb density; all it needs is another few years to come together. This is a remarkably vibrant and primary Tignanello. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.

The Antinori family has been committed to the art of winemaking for over six centuries since 1385 when Giovanni di Piero Antinori became a member of the "Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri," the Florentine Winemaker’s Guild. All throughout its history, twenty-six generations long, the Antinori family has managed the business directly making innovative and sometimes bold decisions while upholding the utmost respect for traditions and the environment.

Today, Albiera Antinori is the president of Marchesi Antinori with the continuous close support of her two sisters, Allegra and Alessia, all actively involved in first person in the business. Their father, Marchese Piero Antinori, is the current Honorary President of the company. Tradition, passion, and intuition are the three driving forces that led Marchesi Antinori to establish itself as one of the most important winemakers of elite Italian wine. The company is one of the Founding Members of the "Associazione Marchi Storici d’Italia," an association for the protection, support and promotion of Italian historical brands.

The family’s historical heritage lies in their estates in Tuscany and Umbria, however over the years they have invested in many other areas, both in Italy and abroad, well known for producing high quality wine, opening new opportunities to appreciate and develop unique new terroirs with great winemaking potential. Each vintage, each plot of land, each new idea to be advanced is a new beginning, a new pursuit for achieving higher quality standards. As Marchese Piero loves to say "Ancient family roots play an important part in our philosophy but they have never hindered our innovative spirit."

Legendary in Italy for its Renaissance art and striking landscape, Tuscany is also home to many of the country’s best red wines. Sangiovese reigns supreme here, as either the single varietal, or a dominant player, in almost all of Tuscany’s best.

A remarkable Chianti, named for its region of origin, will have a bright acidity, supple tannins and plenty of cherry fruit character. From the hills and valleys surrounding the medieval village of Montalcino, come the distinguished and age-worthy wines based on Brunello (Sangiovese). Earning global acclaim since the 1970s, the Tuscan Blends are composed solely of international grape varieties or a mix of international and Sangiovese. The wine called Vine Nobile di Montepulciano, composed of Prognolo Gentile (Sangiovese) and is recognized both for finesse and power.
