Cabernet Franc, a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon, is the subtler and more delicate of the Cabernets. Supported by the mediating effect of the Great Lakes—Lake Superior, Michigan, Huron, and Erie—Michigan produces excellent wines from the aromatic white varieties Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer and especially Riesling. Pinot Noir is responsible for the state’s small, but impressive production of sparkling wines.
