Winemaker Notes

The Louis M. Martini 2015 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon wine reflects the best of the warm, narrow Dry Creek Valley and the hot yet wind-cooled Alexander Valley. Together, these unique features create a rich, superbly balanced Cabernet Sauvignon with copious yet supple tannins. Those tannins make the young wine approachable but will still give it enough texture to age gracefully. This wine features concentrated flavors including wild berries, plum, licorice, and mocha. The full-bodied and mouth-coating texture on the palate leads to a long and graceful finish.

With fruit sourced from Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley, a plethora of perfectlyripe fruit is layered in this juicy red. Cherry liqueur and toffee-mocha-oak on the nose is luxurious, while blackberry and plum surge on the palate to jam with anise and mocha intertwining with snappy dry tannins. This has an Old-World profile. We tasted the wine in an exclusively-crafted Riedel Louis M. Martini Cabernet Sauvignon glass with a laser-cut rim and a longer bowl. The concentrated layers of flavor were perceived when sipped in a different wine glass.

COMMENTARY: When I think about a Sonoma Cabernet, red fruit and soft palate comes to mind. The 2015 Louis M Martini certainly embodies those ideals. TASTING NOTES: This medium bodied wine is bright and lively. Its aromas and flavors of fresh red fruits and a hint of licorice should pair it well with a lightly-seasoned lamb stew. While Sonoma County is acclaimed—and rightfully so—for its Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and Zinfandels, it also produces exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Of the region’s 18 American Viticultural Areas, only a handful produce top-notch Cabernet Sauvignon. These appellations include Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Sonoma Valley and Dry Creek Valley. Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignons made in these appellations can offer a complex array of aromas and flavors. Fruit notes such as blackberry, blackcurrant, cassis, black cherry and raspberry often are accompanied by hints of graphite, dusty earth, cigar box, toast and vanilla. The varietal has a rich history in Sonoma, and some of these Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet-based blends rival the best from Napa Valley.
