Winemaker Notes

The Monte Rosso Cabernet Sauvignon is a hand crafted wine sourced from the best vineyard blocks within Monte Rosso. This is a full-bodied wine revealing flavors of melted chocolate, black cherry, and earthy aromatics with accents of anise and brown spice. The dark concentrated fruit interlaces with firm, velvety tannins to result in a balanced wine with a long, lingering finish. It is a perfect complement to warm, earthy dishes, game and red meat such as wild boar, venison and grilled filet mignon. One of our best vintages yet.

This is solid as a rock with a metal, terracotta and berry character. Full-bodied, chewy and intense. Very powerful and solid. Muscular. Lasts for minutes. Spectacular.

Inky red-purple in color and thick, this is a powerfully impressive Cabernet from the mighty Monte Rosso Vineyard. It’s rich in spicy cinnamon, deep, dark plum and herbal tobacco. With the acidity in balance, it offers huge leather up front, dotted by undertones of cedar and pencil shavings. The finish is deftly accented by a seasoning of black pepper that lingers on the tongue.

Even better is the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Rosso Vineyard (880 cases). Tipping the scales at 15.2% natural alcohol, this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon spent 27 months in mostly French oak (about 12% American is utilized). Deep and full-bodied with blueberry, blackberry and cassis fruit intermixed with notions of licorice, new saddle leather, earth, spice and Christmas fruitcake, this full-bodied, multi-dimensional, layered, concentrated wine can be drunk between 2014 and 2030+.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.

Sonoma Valley Wine

Sonoma County, California

View all products

Perhaps the most historically significant appellation in Sonoma County, the Sonoma Valley is home to both Buena Vista winery, California's oldest commercial winery, and Gundlach Bundschu winery, California's oldest family-run winery.

It is also one of the more geologically and climactically diverse districts. The valley includes and overlaps four distinct Sonoma County sub-appellations, including Carneros, Moon Mountain District, Sonoma Mountain and Bennett Valley. With mountains, benchlands, plains, abundant sunshine and the cooling effects of the nearby Pacific, this appellation can successfully produce a wide range of grape varieties. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Gewürztraminer, and most notably, Zinfandel all thrive here. Ancient Zinfandel vines over 100 years old produce small crops of concentrated, spicy fruit, which in turn make some of the Valley's most unique wines. These can also be made as “field blends” (wines made from a mix of grape varieties grown in the same vineyard) along with Petite Sirah, Carignan and Alicante Bouschet.
