Leeuwin Estate Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 Front Label
Leeuwin Estate Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 Front Label

Winemaker Notes

The bouquet is vibrant with a concentrated fruit profile of abundant blackcurrant, dark cherries and mulberry. Beneath the lifted aromatics of anise, cocoa, clove, black olive and earthy wild field mushroom provide elegant layers to a highly expressive and complex nose.

On the palate structure and fruit weight work harmoniously, characterized by a dark fruit core of blackcurrant and forest fruits. Savory spices of dried sage, cassia bark, and tobacco gives subtle texture, and combines with diligent oak integration and a fine acid line. All components arrive to a finish, which is featured by slightly chalky cocoa powder-like tannins.

Possessing a medium-deep garnet color, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Art Series shows notes of kirsch, red currant jelly and black berry tart, with hints of sandalwood and cinnamon toast. This wine is firm, on the delicate side in terms of style, and earthy with beautiful purity.

A textbook example of Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2007 Art Series offers perfumed cassis fruit just tinged with mint and tobacco. There's ample body yet classic Cabernet restraint, so it's not jammy or overdone. The tannins are supple enough to make it enjoyable now, yet sufficient to see it through 2018, at least.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.
