Winemaker Notes

Medium to deep crimson with purple hues. Lifted blueberries, blackcurrants, mint and black olive dominate the aroma with lovely cedarand hints of sweet spice adding to the complexity. Bright and juicyberry fruits coat the palate and mingle with brambly spice, hints ofblack olive and anise. Medium to full body with velvety, fine, grape and oak tannins add to the structure and flow onto the long, fruitful and spicy finish.

Vivid purple. Pungent cherry and blackcurrant aromas are complicated by mocha, tobacco and licorice nuances. On the plate, juicy dark berry and bitter cherry flavors are lifted and sharpened by tangy acidity. The lively, penetrating finish features sappy dark berry and floral pastille notes and smooth, slow-building tannins.

The power of cabernet, that is what the fine 2011 Langmeil Jackman's is all about, yet there is a nice subtle note about this wine. Deep ruby and almost black in color; full-fledged black fruit aromas, with excellent density; medium bodied, firm and well built on the palate; dry, good acidity, well balanced; fine, black fruit flavors; medium finish. Lots going on here in the aftertaste. (Tasted: February 29, 2016, San Francisco, CA)

Langmeil, Australia
Langmeil Winemaker Paul Lindner Winery Image
The land on which Langmeil Winery now stands was purchased by a 36 year old German blacksmith, Christian Auricht. He and his family arrived in South Australia in 1838 after emigrating from eastern-central Europe (Silesia) to escape religious persecution.

Christian planted his first acre of vines on the estate. The variety was Shiraz and the vines are still producing fruit today. Auricht's old vineyard is the source of Langmeil Winery's single vineyard Shiraz. This rare wine commemorates the pioneering spirit of the first settlers and, because of their willingness to endure so much hardship for the right to keep their faith, it has been named The Freedom 1843 Shiraz. The vineyard is believed to be one of the oldest known surviving Shiraz vineyards in the world (pictured here).

The property was purchased in 1996 by three local mates whose families have lived in the Barossa Valley for several generations: Richard Lindner, Carl Lindner and Chris Bitter. They restored the remaining old buildings and the village well and beautified the gardens. As a tribute to the early pioneers, the new owners refurbished the old winery and named it Langmeil, after the original village.

Langmeil's award winning premium range is internationally recognized and has contributed towards the winery being regarded as one of the top premium wine producers in Australia

Barossa Valley Wine

Barossa, Australia

View all products

Historically and presently the most important wine-producing region of Australia, the Barossa Valley is set in the Barossa zone of South Australia, where more than half of the country’s wine is made. Because the climate is very hot and dry, vineyard managers work diligently to ensure grapes reach the perfect levels of phenolic ripeness.

The intense heat is ideal for plush, bold reds, particularly Shiraz on its own or Rhône Blends. Often Shiraz and Cabernet partner up for plump and powerful reds.

While much less prevalent, light-skinned varieties such as Riesling, Viognier or Semillon produce vibrant Barossa Valley whites.

Most of Australia’s largest wine producers are based here and Shiraz plantings date back as far as the 1850s or before. Many of them are dry farmed and bush trained, still offering less than one ton per acre of inky, intense, purple juice.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.
