Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The estate's 2007 Monferrato Rosso Pin (65% Nebbiolo, 35% Barbera d'Asti Bionzo) is gorgeous in this vintage. A blast of sweet perfumed cherries leads to roses, spices and minerals. The Barbera seems to provide a core of gorgeous, expressive fruit while the Nebbiolo gives the wine its sense of proportion. Everything is beautifully balanced in this highly pleasing red. A few years of cellaring should help soften the tannins, but the wine’s pedigree is amply evident even at this early stage. In 2007, the Pin spent 16-18 months in new French oak. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017.
Attracting the most glory, prestige and fame to the Piedmont region, Nebbiolo in all of its expressions—Barolo, Barbaresco, Roero, Ghemme and Gattinara—creates a complex wine, truly unique for its delicate qualities combined with strength and a great potential to improve over time.
But Nebbiolo isn’t all there is to red wine from Piedmont! Barbera is the most planted variety and historically most popular as a dependable, food-friendly, everyday wine.
Beyond these two, a surprising number of red varieties call Piedmont their home. Worth a try include Dolcetto for its bold concentration and aromas of spice cake. Other grapes to investigate include Freisa, Croatina, Brachetto, Grignolino and Pelaverga.
