Winemaker Notes

Wonderful aromas of wild herbs as well as mineral notes show the Riesling abbey in the nose and on the palate. A little lemon, grapefruit and flint grind the spicy minerality of this steep Riesling.

Vinified in large oak and entirely from vines planted in 1937, the 2018 Bingerbrück Abtei Rupertsberg Riesling trocken Prestige ("Abtei 1937") is exclusively bottled for Skurnik's Terry Theise collection. Bottled in July this year, the wine offers a very delicate and clear, slightly oaky bouquet of ripe and elegant fruit aromas. Round and textured on the palate, this is a full-bodied and persistently intense, well-structured dry Riesling that isn't as austere and crystalline as the "German" standard version and delivers a certain richness with fine tannins.

Riesling possesses a remarkable ability to reflect the character of wherever it is grown while still maintaining its identity. A regal variety of incredible purity and precision, this versatile grape can be just as enjoyable dry or sweet, young or old, still or sparkling and can age longer than nearly any other white variety. Somm Secret—Given how difficult it is to discern the level of sweetness in a Riesling from the label, here are some clues to find the dry ones. First, look for the world “trocken.” (“Halbtrocken” or “feinherb” mean off-dry.) Also a higher abv usually indicates a drier Riesling.

Steep and terraced slopes of a sandstone, porphyry, and slate produce some of Germany’s best Rieslings, which are full of pronounced aromas, spice and mineral.
