Winemaker Notes
The Judge Chardonnay shows the power and refinement that is the hallmark for the famously rocky, shy-bearing vineyard on the family land. It has a stony aroma and magnificent length. The first impression forms around the mineral core and the brilliant mouth-watering acidity. The intensely concentrated character appears subtly on the horizon- look for peach, marzipan, citrus, and honeysuckle. This grandeur is only possible from vines grown in shy producing, mineral rich soil.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2006 Chardonnay The Judge is one of the vintage's more compelling examples of this varietal. Like its siblings, it is aged 22 months in French oak (mostly new), and is bottled with no clarification. The Judge represents a selection of the finest barrels and is an homage to Kongsgaard's father. It exhibits more white peach, pineapple, and tropical fruit characteristics as well as a steely minerality, full body, and more power than the regular cuvee.

Fifth-generation Napa natives, Maggy and John Kongsgaard began their endeavor in the 1970s planting The Judge vineyard on their family land near Napa. The inaugural Kongsgaard wines came in 1996. Now, Kongsgaard produces The Judge, Chardonnay, VioRous, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon in their underground winery—a cave dug into the volcanic rock, high on the eastern rim of the Napa Valley where they have planted a spectacular mountain vineyard. Kongsgaard also directs the farming under long-term contracts on several perfect acres in the Napa Carneros and near the winery. These intensely farmed, shy-bearing vineyards and Kongsgaard's traditional low-intervention winemaking produce powerful, graceful wines—vivid expressions of vineyard and variety. Production is limited to what Maggy and John, with their son Alex, can make with their own hands.
