Winemaker Notes

Crisp green apple, ginger and ripe peach combine on the nose with just a hint of citrus, honey and white pepper. The palate boasts delicious flavors of rock melon and peach, mandarin and lemon zest. There is also a hint of Grüner’s signature white pepper flavor. This is a fine, concentrated wine with a lovely textural element from the wild fermented portion alongside crisp acidity and a long, refreshing finish.

Scents of lime and apricot scone heighten the senses in preparation for notes of key lime, white flowers, and fresh linen. Crisp and clean, this wine is a true standout

The youthful 2021 Grüner Veltliner (Marlborough) from Jules Taylor is clean, bright and pure. This semi-aromatic variety offers up classic characters of apple and lemon alongside celery and a zesty spicy note. There's texture built through the midpalate, adding substance to this light to midweight expression. Taylor claims the style reminds her of "the illegitimate lovechild of Pinot Gris and Riesling," and she might be on to something. Enjoy in youth for its energy and drive.

Fun to say and delightfully easy to drink, Grüner Veltliner calls Austria its homeland. While some easily quaffable Grüners come in a one-liter—a convenient size—many high caliber single vineyard bottlings can benefit from cellar aging. Somm Secret—About 75% of the world’s Grüner Veltliner comes from Austria but the variety is gaining ground in other countries, namely Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and the United States.

An icon and leading region of New Zealand's distinctive style of Sauvignon blanc, Marlborough has a unique terroir, making it ideal for high quality grape production (of many varieties). Despite some common generalizations, which could be fairly justified given that Marlborough is responsible for 90% of New Zealand's Sauvignon blanc production, the wines from this region are actually anything but homogenous. At the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island, the vineyards of Marlborough benefit from well-draining, stony soils, a dry, sunny climate and wide temperature fluctuations between day and night, a phenomenon that supports a perfect balance between berry ripeness and acidity.

The region’s king variety, Sauvignon blanc, is beloved for its pungent, aromatic character with notes of exotic tropical fruit, freshly cut grass and green bell pepper along with a refreshing streak of stony minerality. These wines are made in a wide range of styles, and winemakers take advantage of various clones, vineyard sites, fermentation styles, lees-stirring and aging regimens to differentiate their bottlings, one from one another.

Also produced successfully here are fruit-forward Pinot noirs (especially where soils are clay-rich), elegant Riesling, Pinot gris and Gewürztraminer.
