Winemaker Notes

The grapes for this delicious wine were handpicked from the oldest vines from a warmer, more protected area within the Goldloch vineyard. This Grosses Gewächs (GG) opens with aromas of golden delicious apple, peach, pineapple, orange, grapefruit and quince. Intense and juicy, well-concentrated and perfectly ripe Riesling. Complex notes of green tea, tarragon and mint. On the palate generous and silky with seamlessly integrated acidity and mineral vibrancy. There is an elegant balance and impressive length with a remarkable grip.

From 32- to 45-year-old vines on quartzite conglomerate soils, the 2017 (Dorsheim) Goldoch Riesling trocken "GG" opens with a delicate and flinty-crystalline bouquet. Vinified entirely in stainless steel until April 2018, this wine opens with an intense and lush, well-concentrated and perfectly ripe Riesling aroma. Crystalline and mineral on the palate, this is a tight and complex, very firm and sustainable dry Riesling with remarkable grip, finesse and elegance. Good tannin structure and mineral vibrancy. Tasted at the domain in July 2019.

Riesling possesses a remarkable ability to reflect the character of wherever it is grown while still maintaining its identity. A regal variety of incredible purity and precision, this versatile grape can be just as enjoyable dry or sweet, young or old, still or sparkling and can age longer than nearly any other white variety. Somm Secret—Given how difficult it is to discern the level of sweetness in a Riesling from the label, here are some clues to find the dry ones. First, look for the world “trocken.” (“Halbtrocken” or “feinherb” mean off-dry.) Also a higher abv usually indicates a drier Riesling.
