Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

An inky red with a magenta hue in the glass, this wine opens with lifted notes of violets, moschino cherries and bright, fresh purple fruits with undertones of caramel. Intense flavors of liquorice, mocha, caramel, nutmeg, cloves and blueberries are in abundance. The palate displays concentration and tightly wound flavors, supported by powdery, fine grained tannins leading into a long savory finish. The length of flavor and power in this wine, whilst still showing finesse and restraint, is what sets it at the pinnacle of red winemaking at Jim Barry Wines.

The name of ‘Armagh’ was bestowed by the original Irish settlers who arrived in 1849 and named the lush, rolling hills after their homeland. In 1968 the vineyard was planted by Jim Barry and yields less than two tonnes per acre. The soil is sandy gravel and receives an average rainfall of 600mm per year. The vineyard lies on a north-west facing slope which acts as a natural sun trap, ensuring the fruit is always fully ripened when picked.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2012 Shiraz The Armagh offers a gorgeous perfume of baking spices, violets, Sichuan pepper and fragrant earth. More earthy and savory in the mouth than on the nose, the palate is superbly structured and taut—built for the long-haul—with a long, complex finish. Still very youthfully, forget this wine for 3-5 more years and consider drinking it over the next 20+.

Robust and dense, this shows plenty of torque to the generous, velvety flavors of huckleberry pie, blueberry syrup, sarsaparilla, cacao and nutmeg, all set on a plush, thick body. The intensity kicks in on the finish, where spice and smoke details linger effortlessly. Drink now through 2040.

This is a delicious glass of ripe shiraz, but there’s a hint of caramelized plum in the nose, and on the richly textural palate there’s a hint of warmth. Just a tad too much of a good thing and therefore maybe not well suited to long aging. Drink now.
